UCC PRESIDENT LAGON RISES ABOVE CHALLENGES
In 2002, the BOARD OF TRUSTEES of UCC had given Rev. Dr. Filemon L. Lagon a clear MANDATE to serve this institution as President & again in 2007, another opportunity for a second term prevailed of which he is grateful & thankful to them.
UCC has continuously stayed true to its role as one of the leading educational springboards for educational progress in the North. It has emerged as one of the top leading nursing schools not only in La Union but in Region I, a Center of Training Institute for Teacher Education in March 7, 2008 also in Region I, one of the Most Outstanding Institutions by PERAA for its commitment to upgrade salaries and benefits of its faculty & staff and many more accolades & laurels in the academic achievements of our students. These distinctions undeniably mark not only the full commitment of the administrative officials, faculty, staff, & studentry in advancing their well-being but above all the Wisdom, Trust & Confidence of the BOT to this institution. Their full cooperation has supported the programs & projects of UCC under Dr. Lagon’s leadership and this unity has been the strongest LINK in the promotion of academic excellence, research services & community involvement as well as its campus infrastructure development.
Few weeks ago, there were lots of surprises & unexpected “Tête-à-Tête” in campus & over the internet that UCC is in the “verge of bankruptcy” & the President is now hiding. These are just hearsays. President Lagon was in Dumaguete attending the ACSCU (Association of Christian Colleges and Universities) National Assembly. UCC’s President stood firm & confident over all these commentaries. A Financial Oversight Committee was created from among the BOT members to reflect in UCC’s financial performance & stability. Hence, after having invested their precious time & shared efforts, talent & resources into examining & culling records & documents, as well as interviewing officials from the Finance/Business offices, they made a clear CONCLUSION that President Lagon has responsible, honest, and clear services of transactions and has maximized expenses despite the meager budget of this institution.
In a Special Board Meeting on May 22, 2009, the Board of Trustees and the UCC Corporation agreed & voted upon in its BT Resolution #09-10, “A UNANIMOUS VOTE OF CONFIDENCE” for President Lagon. Six (6) other Board Actions were taken & approved by authorizing the President to renegotiate economic provisions of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement; rationalize the plantilla by streamlining other areas; that all matters with financial implications in the area of subject-loading will be subject to the approval of the President only; engage in a new, effective & comprehensive software, sell the untransfered property at Sto. Tomas with a minimum bid price, & to offer the President’s residence lot to a joint venture (Build Operate & Transfer) or lease agreement. These were clear indications of BOT’s Trust & Confidence in UCC’s governance today.
With this result, UCC calls everyone to deeply reflect on what can be done as members of the UCC community & find within the strength & courage to participate in UCC’s initiative to promote good quality of instruction, research, extension and production in the years to come.
Let every stakeholder work together in building a strong UCC!!! Let everybody stand firm in responding to the needs of the studentry & for the realization of the ideals of unity & progress. As the institution”s name is UNION CHRISTIAN COLLEGE, let every stakeholder aim to greater heights as a CHRISTIAN SCHOOL with a unified VISION. Thank you & may you continuously support the administration with this year’s thrust, “Keep on Doing What Matters Most.”/VEV
